Volume 3 Week 3.2

As I said in my previous post, I am in New York City this week, and I am not happy with myself as far as BYU-Idaho goes. I have my laptop computer with me, but I am not used to such a small screen, and I forgot some important papers that I need for this week’s lesson.  I had to create a duplicate of the paperwork, which was tedious, but I got it done. I am out of my comfort zone, but I will complete my work, as I have the desire to do so.

One of the things that I left home was my set of practice sheets for the German Kurrentschrift. I had been using them as a guide for translating, and now I do not have them. I believe that this is a blessing, as I have to read and recognize for myself, those words and sentences that I have to translate and transliterated for my next assignment. I believe in this school, and I believe that I will have a “Gift of Tongues” experience when I work on that assignment. I just have a feeling that I will be successful. We’ll see…

Volume 3 Week 3.1

I enjoyed this week’s readings and videos, as they helped me to understand a little more about what it takes to be an entrepreneur, and to start your own business. I especially liked listening to President Hinckley’s dedication speech. I was an adult convert to the Church, and as such, was unaware of General Conference, and the hierarchy that we have in place. Therefore, the first General Conference that I listened to was the April 2009 Conference, which took place after the President had passed. What I am trying to say is that I had not previously heard him give a talk, and it was refreshing to hear him tell jokes while he was giving the talk. I also liked the case study about the DUCK tour boat startup. It really painted a clear picture, with comments, about how to go about starting a business, and what needs to be done to do so.

I am in New York City this week, to visit my daughter, and I am not happy with myself as far as BYU-Idaho goes. I have my laptop computer with me, but I am not used to such a small screen, as well as the fact that I forgot some important papers that I need for this week’s lessons. I had to create a duplicate of the paperwork, which was tedious, but I got it done.

Volume 3 Week 2.2

This was a good week for me for a number of reasons. First, my mother was in town, and I was able to spend time with her (she lives in Florida with my stepfather) which is a semi-annual thing. Second, each of my two youngest daughters had their birthdays, 4 and 6, this week. And third, my chronic back main was at a level 2 this week, instead of the level 6 of the past few. In addition, my new church calling “requires” me to visit members for weekly visits. This started as a chore that was outside of my comfort zone, and it has become one of the things that I enjoy. I am becoming more comfortable with this, and I am getting to know more of the church membership. This is heading in a good direction.

For school, we were asked to look us means of research that are “outside of the box,” using Facebook and other nontraditional websites. This was a good exercise for me, as I am 55 and not a heavy user of social media to research my ancestors. After this, I will spend more time on Facebook, looking for the answers that I seek. I think that it will be very helpful in researching the descendants of the original immigrants from Baden, whose children I am unaware of. I have knowledge of 128 descendants of the original couple (including their spouses), but I have intimate knowledge of the descendants of only two of their grandchildren, which is 84 of the 128. I plan on using what I learn in this class, and searches on Facebook, to increase that number. I am sure that this number is close to 200, and maybe more. If I can do this, I can link together my family, past and present, which will give them the opportunity to receive the blessing of receiving the Gospel at some time.

Volume 3 Week 2.1

Lesson 02

This is my first blog post for my small business creation class. I have kept a diary/journal/blog for prior classes, and I found the experience helpful and rewarding. I enjoy going back to those posts to reread them. I reminisce about the events of those days, and enjoy the circumstances that I wrote about. I am looking forward to adding to that with these.

For an assignment this week, I was asked to brainstorm about what I could do for my “$100.00 Challenge Business” assignment. This is a business that I am to create, work at, keep track of its revenues and expenses, and then donate, lend actually, any profits to a small business in need. This is an exciting assignment, and I had quite a few ideas. I am leaning towards a business where there is little overhead, such as a cupcake stand or a dog walker.

This past Sunday, we had a conference at my church. It was the first time that I attended, and after the experience that I had, I do not plan on missing another one. The counsel that I received from the elders of my stake was remarkable. The lessons that they shared were things that I could apply to my life, and I plan to do so.

Volume 3 Week 2

I just found out that I have to submit a blog post for each of my classes this term, an entrepreneur class and a genealogy class, so I will be posting two entries per week, for the next 12-ish weeks. When I did this in the past, I found it to be very rewarding, and it enhanced my learning. Let’s see if I can keep this momentum going…

Volume 3 Week 1

This term starts the final stretch of my collegiate days at BYU-Idaho. I have two classes to complete for my Entrepreneurship certificate, and three to complete my AAS in Family History. This is an exciting time for me, as I am getting ready to start my own business, and the anticipation is overwhelming to me. In a year, I hope to be starting at this endeavor.

By default, I am taking German genealogy as my geographic specialty this year. I am glad it worked out this was, as I was not sure which region to study. This is a good thing, as I have relatives, a family of six, who emigrated from Germany in the mid-1800s. I know where they ended up in the United States, but I need to know their origination point in Germany, Baden to be specific, to complete my work. This class will give me the knowledge to find the means necessary to complete this research. If am able to do this, I will be able to add more generations to the branch of that tree, by finding more relatives in Germany. I am looking forward to this, as my research has stagnated for these fine folks. In a way, I am happy to have made German research my choice.

Fall 2017 Term

I am excited for this term, because I am assigned to add to this blog. As you can see, from the gap in my posts, when it is not required to do, I fail at this. This term, I am learning how to research in German records, and I am also taking another Entrepreneur class. This is going to be a good semester.

Ciao…
